Understanding Redwood Hot Tubs

Earlier, redwood hot tubs were a popular alternative to hot tub construction. They were used specifically for manufacturing California hot tubs. Over the time, the old growth redwood has disappeared.

Generally, these large majestic trees are found in the rain forest areas of the west coast. They have been either harvested or a part of protected forest areas. Now, you can find redwood hot tubs in small numbers. Usually, they are made from smaller second growth or famed redwood.

But the secondary growth redwood doesn’t have the same properties like its previous giant generations. These majestic massive redwood trees were ideal to use for hot tub construction purposes. These trees had a very tight ring pattern, making them decay and rot resistant.

Smaller famed redwood doesn’t come with the same properties like the 2000 year old redwood trees. Currently, the redwood trees have very large ring structure and much more susceptible to decay. Most redwood hot tub manufacturers have switched to other construction materials.

When it comes to constructing hot tubs, Western Red Cedar is considered for its superiority over water applications. Over centuries, the cedar canoes and water vessels have been used. Western Red Cedar has been used for constructing hot tubs. The main difference between western red cedar and redwood is the color.

Redwood hot tubs have darker purple color whereas the western red cedar tubs have deeper red or brown color. Both woods work really well in water. However, cedar emits natural oils that give off aromatic fragrance. That’s why cedar hot tubs are popular amongst hot tub owners.

Red wood available earlier was used for hot tub construction. With the increase in demands and decrease in supply, redwood hot tubs had become more expensive. Most redwood hot tub manufacturers looked at the alternative woods.

In fact, cedar woods have steady supply, which gives them a competitive advantage over redwood hot tubs. The environmentally sustainable cedar was originated from the forests of Canada. Even, most redwood tubs manufacturers were tried to manufacture the hot tubs by using secondary growth trees. But their quality wasn’t matched with cedar.
